The Sweetness of Life

New Year's Eve around - Chinese New Year around - Carnival around ...  Off we go into Lent.

Speaking of fasting - I'm always thinking about my current favorite topic these days: sugar! Specifically, the wonderfully sweet sugar in our blood. In other words, blood sugar - the number one source of energy - with sharp edges and not allowed to stay in the blood for long. It takes the right amount of insulin and alert cells with well-functioning receptors to ensure that the blood sugar disappears quickly to where it is needed.

How studies on sugar consumption have changed in recent years! The effects of our industrially produced sugary foods are slowly becoming apparent. And I'm not just talking about diabetes.  Many studies now suggest that added sugar increases blood pressure and heart rate, reduces insulin resistance (see above), feeds inflammatory processes, and disrupts the entire metabolism! This sheds a whole new and warm light on the previous villains, salt and cholesterol!  And a bright LED spotlight on added sugars - glucose and fructose. Some lobbyists of the Food industry are getting a good shake!
